Investment by China

Letter June 14, 2011
The Chinese government’s success in sparing downstream populations from floods had been overestimated

LONDON: This is with reference to Shahid Javed Burki’s article of June 13 titled “Chinese investment in water projects”. The Three Gorges dam is an environmental catastrophe. The Chinese government’s success in sparing downstream populations from floods had been overestimated and it has also failed to manage droughts downstream. The river is ecologically dead, and the resettlement of 1.4 million people has still not been completed. Large dams are no longer fashionable. Such projects have massive long-run external costs.
