Our national carrier still has a mindset of the 90s
KARACHI: According to a recent news report in your paper, the Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has asked its female cabin crew to lose weight or else the administration will have them fired. It is surprising to know that it is 2019 and our national carrier still has a mindset of the 90s. It is still holding on to beauty standards that push many women to the brink of existence and on top of that considering the worth of a female employee not according to her qualification or capabilities but according to her looks.
Women, or air hostesses in this context, should not be judged on the basis of their looks and be asked to adhere to beauty standards set by society to please men — to appear thin, fair and pretty. A woman’s worth is not and should not be gauged by her appearance. The government should look into the matter and ask the PIA administration to withdraw the order.
