KARACHI: Gas shortage which was once only a concern in the provinces of Balochistan and Punjab has now engulfed Sindh also. Many areas in the province, even the metropolitan city of Karachi, have been witnessing gas load-shedding since the start of the winter season this year.
In some areas, such as Mehmodabad, recent gas load-shedding lasted for a whole of five days. Apparently the sewerage line and the gas line in the vicinity had mixed up, but when the gas providing company was contacted to provide a solution, they refused to pay heed to the issue by saying that such a thing was not their concern. Hence, the residents of the locality had to individually fix their lines and pay for it. Such an issue may fall out of the domain of the company, but in such a case the government apparatus should constitute bodies that can be contacted for quick solutions.
It is after all the responsibility of the government to ensure basic amenities to its citizens.
