Deadly smog

Letter December 24, 2018
Pakistan is ranked third in the world for the number of deaths caused by pollution

TURBAT: Pakistan is ranked third in the world — behind China and India — for the number of deaths caused by pollution, with 125,000 people killed annually according to one measure by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a research institute founded by the Gates Foundation.

This year, we saw a rise in the number of accidents owing to smog — a mixture of smoke and fog. Fog is the accumulated water vapours suspended near the earth’s surface while smoke arises from many sources, including factories and automobiles.

In view of this, it becomes increasingly important for the government to prioritise taking relevant measures to curb the growing instances of smog in the country, especially in the province of Punjab as it is the most vulnerable to this climatic change.
