Kitchen gardens will increase self-reliance
LAHORE: Regardless of how successful the chicken farming plan of the government will turn out to be once implemented, it is commendable that the government of Punjab has devised a plan to promote kitchen gardening, thereby encouraging people to grow vegetables in their kitchen gardens.
It is important for a society that has embraced the fast food culture welcomingly. With the sudden sprout of fast food joints in Pakistan, eating habits of the younger population have heavily shifted towards ready-for-consumption food which is not only an unhealthy trend but is also resulting in environmental degradation.
Kitchen gardens will increase self-reliance in case of a population that depends on agricultural supplies from rural regions of the country. The approach is not only economical but also ensures easy availability of vegetables.
