Karachi’s water woes

Letter December 09, 2018
We need to act fast and now. There is little time left to save our city

KARACHI: The metropolitan city of Karachi has time and again been in the news for its crippling water issues. But is seems like little to nothing is being done to avert the threat that looms over the city.

Karachi is home to as many as 20 million people of the country, according to the Census 2017. However, most of these people are either dependent on private water tankers that charge exuberant prices, or others have dug bore wells that have only resulted in reducing the groundwater levels of the city. Either of these are not a solution to the city’s water woes.

While most of the discussions revolve round the looming threat, little has been asked from the body responsible for the provision of continuous water flows to households in the city. The body is lagging behind and costing the lives of many who are left to drink contaminated water as the water provided by water tankers is not entirely fit for consumption.

We need to act fast and now. There is little time left to save our city.
