The death of Sarfaraz Shah (II)

Letter June 10, 2011
People are fed up of inquiries and commissions because these lead nowhere. Their results are never made public.

TURBAT: After the killing of five unarmed Chechens by paramilitary forces in Quetta, the already-shocked people of this country have witnessed another tragedy in Karachi, the brutal killing of Sarfaraz Shah by Rangers. The incident has got international attention, and leading newspapers in the world have covered this piece of news in their front pages. This is not the only case of brutality and extra-judicial killing that we have seen. Dozens of Baloch youths have been facing the same treatment by unknown offenders and are being brutally killed in this manner, with their bodies later thrown on the roadside. This brings us to the fundamental question: What is the state doing to prevent all of this from happening and in ensuring that its citizens are able to live at least in relative safety? People are fed up of inquiries and commissions because these lead nowhere. Their results are never made public and almost always never acted upon, so other than serving as PR stunts, they are useless.
