The death of Sarfaraz Shah

Letter June 10, 2011
How many independent commissions are we going to form?

WATERLOO, ON, CANADA: This is with reference to your editorial of June 10 titled “The death of Sarfaraz Shah”.

I have one question to ask — how many independent commissions are we going to form? It seems as if every week we have more than one incident happening and a demand is made for an independent commission to ascertain what happened and assign blame. What will become of these anyway?

The point I am trying to make is that it’s not really the job of a commission to unravel the truth. Those who are in charge of our various institutions need to ensure that the acts of omission or commission of subordinates are properly investigated and those guilty are held accountable and punished. The action needs to be taken by the institution itself, rather than relying on the neutrality of an independent commission. Only then will our institutions mature and evolve.
