Many women in Pakistan have committed suicide because of the domestic violence they face
LAHORE: Many women in Pakistan have committed suicide because of the domestic violence they face. Many others have been killed in the name of honour. This year alone, 30 women and 19 men were killed in the name of honour, 14 women committed suicide over domestic dispute, and 21 women and eight men were tortured to death in Balochsitan.
This happens because of lack of awareness among the masses. Especially in rural areas, women are less aware of their basic rights and there is a high illiteracy rate. However, this is not to say that only rural areas have cases of violence against women. Such cases have also been reported from metropolitan cities.
To tackle this issue in an effective manner, Aurat Foundation has started an awareness campaign from November 25 to go on till December 10 in Balochistan. The campaign aims at reducing violence against women in different fields.
