Extrajudicial killing by Rangers (IV)

Letter June 09, 2011
The inquiry that the Rangers have ordered will not do. We cannot trust them to investigate their own.

KARACHI: I could not believe my eyes when I saw a Rangers soldier shoot an unarmed man dead in broad daylight, right outside one of Karachi’s busiest parks. Even if, as the Rangers are now claiming, he was a robber, he did not deserve to die. The inquiry that the Rangers have ordered will not do. We cannot trust them to investigate their own. The government should order an investigation by a sitting high court judge and blame should be assigned to all those guilty of this heinous act. That way, there will be no escaping the law. Nothing other than that will suffice.
