Chinese consulate attack

Letter November 26, 2018
No secret that sensitive areas and high-profile places like the Chinese Consulate are the terrorists’ main targets

SHIKARPUR: The Friday’s (Nov 23) terrorist attack at the Chinese Consulate in Karachi proves that a lot more needs to be done to stem the rising tide of terrorism and extremism in the country. The attack was successfully foiled by security forces, but not before several lives had been lost.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has rightly pointed out at the attack being a conspiracy to harm the relations between Pakistan and China, and halt progress related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). India, with the backing of the United States, has left no stone unturned to sabotage the economic corridor billed as a fate changer for the whole region, not just Pakistan. In view of the conspiracies, Pakistan needs to improve the capacity of its security apparatus so that it could respond to any such situations swiftly and effectively.

It’s no secret that sensitive areas and high-profile places like the Chinese Consulate are the terrorists’ main targets. That such gruesome attacks affect the prospects of foreign direct investment in the country goes without saying. Even though the security forces took timely and effective action and controlled the situation from escalating, the attack has exposed security loopholes that need to be plugged. The authorities need to take steps for effective implementation of the National Action Plan against terrorism that was devised in the wake of the APS massacre in 2014.
