Expectations from the hockey team

Letter November 21, 2018
fans are hopeful that the national hockey team, led by skipper Rizwan Senior, will perform well this time around

DADU: Hockey is our national game. The fans across the country are expecting a lot from Pakistan hockey team and are also ready to support the Greenshirts in the 14th Hockey World Cup which will be played from 28th November to 16th December in India this year. It is for the first time in the history of hockey that 16 teams will participate in a world cup event. The teams have been divided into four groups. Pakistan is in group D with Germany, Malaysia and the Netherlands. If we look at the previous record of our hockey team, particularly in the world cup contests, Pakistan has been victorious on four occasions which is a world record. No other hockey team has been able to do this. The last time Pakistan won a hockey world cup was in 1994 against the Netherlands.

So, 24 years have passed since the national team last won the world cup. The Pakistan team recently showed brilliant performance in the Asian hockey Champions trophy held in Oman last month. Pakistan and India shared the trophy. However, the boys from this side will have to work hard as they have to face world class teams in the world cup. Unfortunately, the Greenshirts could not qualify for the previous hockey world cup in 2014 but the fans are hopeful that the national hockey team, led by skipper Rizwan Senior, will perform well this time around.
