Freedom of choice

Letter November 15, 2018
As much as we as a society like being the advocates of choice and the freedom to exercise our choices

LAHORE: A student not allowed entering a school in Lahore for some event due to her donning a hijab explains well how Pakistanis and the prevailing mindset is itself the reason of the problem Pakistanis keep looking to a solution for.

As much as we as a society like being the advocates of choice and the freedom to exercise our choices, we often forget how others are entitled to the same. How when donning a Western attire is a choice, wearing a hijab, niqab or an abaya is equally a choice one is free to practise. Further, this isn’t the first time that an educational institution that should be fostering equality and freedom of choice among youngsters has questioned one’s attire.

With that, it doesn’t take much to understand how and at what stage of one’s life this kind of mindset and thinking is developed. It is about time we understood that freedom implies one being able to choose for them without any compulsion.
