Karachi’s traffic woes

Letter November 11, 2018
Seems like nothing is about to change

KARACHI: Time and again, the incompetence of law-enforcement agencies in Karachi have been highlighted, especially that of the traffic police in the metropolis. But seems like nothing is about to change. Some argue that since the city is too big, people get away with corruption, but I beg to differ.

The traffic woes of the city aren’t because it’s too big but because the traffic police and the authorities concerned they report too are too busy filling their pockets. This is blatantly visible at the Super Highway.

A designated place for passenger buses has been assigned. A place where buses are supposed to pick and drop passengers. But these buses are found dropping passengers at the junction near Sohrab Goth. More often than not, these buses drop passengers right in the middle of the road and as these passengers quickly get off, they are surrounded by auto-rickshaws.

Owing to this, the highway has frequent traffic jams. And the people responsible to ensure that these buses only drop passengers at the designated bus station, are standing and chit-chatting away just mere six feet away from where they have blocked the traffic. They get their ‘cut’ from bus drivers and hence, happily choose to look the other way.

Such blatant violation of law has become a frequent occurrence in Karachi and no one seems to be bothered.

The PTI-led government should work closely with the PPP — which has chosen to ignore the growing problem — and sort out the mess.
