Infant geniuses

Letter October 31, 2018
Why now no sphere of life is producing giants and those who earned fame and recognition through hard work

KARACHI: I have no hesitation in saying that we are living in an age of frivolity, hyper happiness and instant popularity. The hunger for instant popularity has pervaded all walks of life be it writing, music, cinema, theatre, TV plays, to name a few. Why now no sphere of life is producing giants and those who earned fame and recognition through hard work, originality and perseverance. Where are the giants of music like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Raees Khan, Ravi Shankar, Mehdi Hasan, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. Great music directors like Naushad, Madan Mohan and Sohail Rana. Pakistan too had important singers like Noor Jahan, Ahmed Rushdi and Masood Rana, and why Nahid Akhtar, Farida Khanum and Munni Begum have gone or have been forced to go into oblivion. Even great movie and TV actors have now been forced to retreat from the scene.

Now we hear of only people who have nothing to show by way of talent and hard work, so they indulge in publicity stunts to gain cheap popularity. We are living in an age of child prodigies and infant geniuses.
