LAHORE: This letter is in response to an opinion piece titled ‘Myth of a safe profession for women’ published in this paper on Oct 13. The piece highlights how being a doctor is no less unsafe for women. Hence, factually such is the case with every profession women are a part of. Be it law or engineering, these and many other professions have been dominated by males for long enough, despite the female counterparts being no less competent.
Alongside, the discouraging attitude of family members is enough to deter a woman from pursuing her plans and ambitions. With that, in professions where females make up for a great number of workforce, they are faced with inequality in terms of opportunities available, pay disparity and most importantly harassment at the hands of male colleagues. Suffice it to say, that not just one profession of medicine, the situation for women is no different anywhere else. And it won’t be different till the time men and society at large take it on themselves to pave the way out for women. It might still take long enough before a major change surfaces out of minor incidents but hopefully that will change the situation for women in real terms.
