KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of June 2 titled “Waziristan operation: ‘Media hype’ dismissed”. When the military denies something as obvious as this it means that something is going to happen. Of course, this is not to deny the fact that the situation in both Afghanistan and Pakistan has been made worse by the wrong policies of the US. Washington, for instance, does not seem to understand that the more violence it uses in Afghanistan, the easier it becomes for al Qaeda and the Taliban to find recruits to their cause.
The Americans are forcing the Pakistan government, perhaps through threats, to use more and more force. But the net result is greater destruction and damage. Also, what about the distinct possibility that once the operation starts, the terrorists could try and slip away to settled areas of the country and that this could take them to the urban centres?
