The price of freedom

Letter June 02, 2011
Saleem’s life and his sacrifice will be forgotten in the mists of time.

CHANTILLY, VA, US: Saroop Ijaz’s article of June 2 titled “The price of freedom” is excellent — absolutely first-class. I met Saleem Shahzad twice on my last visit to Islamabad. I usually consort with (boring) economists so he was different, with a fresh background and perspective. He kept me enthralled and spell-bound.

He struck me as very bright, honest, articulate, unafraid and deeply committed to his work and profession. After a sumptuous breakfast which his poor wife must have prepared over many hours (and about which I did protest), I left him with the pithy words to “be careful and take care”. I did not know then those words would come to haunt me.

I am too distressed at his passing to say anything more. However, for those of you, including the writer, who think/hope we may see some light fall on this heinous act, I hate to be negative but nothing will happen. Nothing ever does in these matters. Saleem’s life and his sacrifice will be forgotten in the mists of time.
