The government needs to address this serious issue
KARACHI: A small eco-friendly gesture can change our attitude towards the environment. After I got married, I adopted a good habit from my wife; not to throw away anything on the road or street thoughtlessly. Put litter in its proper place: the trash bin.
I was sensitised by mere advice. It is disturbing to witness piles of garbage along roads and streets of Karachi and the foul smell prevalent in most parts of the city. This shows the apathy of the government. All the waste end up in open spaces everyday which is subsequently burnt into an unpleasant source of air pollutants, from greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide to tiny particles and toxic chemicals that can harm human lungs and other organs of the body.
According to reports, around two million people die prematurely from effects of polluted air every year. If we plant trillion trees and don’t sensitise our people, the tree plantation projects are good for nothing. The government needs to address this serious issue.
