Upgrading agricultural practices

Letter September 17, 2018
There is a dire need to update and modify the agriculture techniques used for cultivation

KARACHI: It is ironic that Pakistan being an agricultural country is confronted with an acute water shortage and drought conditions. There are so many factors which have led to the rise in prices of daily-use commodities. The main factors however are the outdated methods used for irrigation and crop harvest and the non-utilisation of abundant resources.

The fragmentation of land, unscientific techniques and unskilled labour and farmers, are the main hindrances in the way of increasing agricultural produce. We get low crop yields. There is a dire need to update and modify the agriculture techniques that are being used for cultivation. It is only then can the country’s economy become stronger and exports rise by increasing the export of agricultural commodities.

It is time both the government and farmers realised the importance of adopting modern agricultural techniques in increasing crop yields. Increased crop yields will also help eliminate the curse of malnutrition and stunting.
