KARACHI: Currently, the country is grappling with numerous crises on multiple fronts and one of which is water crisis. Metaphorically, it is often said that the third world war would be fought over water between countries. Water being a basic necessity pivotal to the existence of living beings is a scarce resource and no efforts are being made for the conservation of this precious commodity in Pakistan. In Pakistan where more than half of the population is facing electricity crisis, lack of water and availability of impure water has also become one of the major cause of death, poverty and hunger. With climatic changes, annual rainfall has too drastically reduced. The government should take actions to prevent the situation from going beyond human control. It should build dams to conserve rainwater. An updated national water policy is the need of the hour, particularly when a neighbouring country uses the water issue as a tool to navigate its relations with Pakistan.
