Porn and rape (II)

Letter May 31, 2011
Pornography and rape are two entirely unrelated concepts in normal society.

LONDON: Pornography and rape are two entirely unrelated concepts in normal society. In the hands of a psychotic individual, however, the two become intertwined — just as violent action movies would influence someone with a propensity for ruthless murder. It is not the porn which instigates rape: Porn is a confounding factor, as perhaps someone with an abnormal psyche/fascination with rape is likely to indulge in violent porn.

Rape cases continue to increase in Pakistan purely because individuals who commit rape do not fear the repercussions. Preying on vulnerable women who are unlikely to come forward, and will be stigmatised and persecuted if they do, is what encourages the actions of these people.

Those who attribute the decrease in rape cases in the US to the recent trend of ‘women watching porn, turning immoral and engaging in extra-marital sex’ miss this point entirely.
