Promoting guns and shooting

Letter September 04, 2018
A three-member bench of SC declared that the Gun & Country Club in the federal capital has no legal standing

KARACHI: On July 9, 2018 a three-member bench of the Supreme Court declared that “the Gun & Country Club in the federal capital has no legal standing and the land on which the club has been established belongs to the Pakistan Sports Board.” The sports board was directed to “take over the land” and the Musharraf-era notification regarding the club’s establishment was nullified by the court.

As members of ‘Citizens Against Weapons’, we are distressed that Dr Fehmida Mirza, the Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination, as one of her first official acts visited the illegal Gun & Country Club and ordered an early upgradation of its facilities. Clearly the honourable minister has no knowledge that she is encouraging a violent activity on illegal premises, on a state property that ought to be returned to its legitimate owners.

We believe that the Inter-Provincial Coordination Ministry has far more important things to accomplish, such as inter-provincial harmony, rather than promoting guns, gun clubs and shooting. We, therefore, urge the government and Dr Fehmida Mirza to work towards complete deweaponisation of private citizens and private militias. The state must assume exclusive responsibility for security of every citizen.
