India’s rape cases

Letter August 26, 2018
A teenager took her own life after being repeatedly raped for months in India

KARACHI: A teenager took her own life after being repeatedly raped for months in India. Our neighbouring country has perhaps become the most dangerous country for women to live in as news of violence against women — especially rape — has worryingly increased.

Whether it is in the capital city, Delhi, or a metropolitan, Mumbai, or in fact even a more conservative city, rape cases are being reported from everywhere almost on a daily basis. Whether arrests of the accused are made or not, the sufferers are left to deal with their emotional and physical wounds on their own. Psychological care is little, if any, and in most cases only the more affluent are able to afford it.

What is worse is while women and girls on the ground are being subjected to brutalities, India’s frivolous entertainment industry — Bollywood — is busy painting a picture of the country that is far removed from reality.

This is not to say that movies should only be made on women who are victims of this patriarchal setup but that men can be educated for better through these movies. Indian movies should stop glorifying stalking and emotional abuse in the name of love.

To save India’s many Nirbhayas, our neighbours should do much better.
