Karachi blackout

KARACHI: The night of the day Pakistan got its 22nd Prime Minister, the city of Karachi experienced a near-complete electricity breakdown.

According to reports, a storm in Hyderabad had caused the tripping of a transmission line that resulted in the blackout.

The power breakdown was so huge that almost the entire city plunged into darkness. With the power breakdown, the halt to the pumping of water is nothing unusual, but this time the supply of gas was cut as well. The gas pressure was too low to start the power generators, with a result that soon there were long queues at petrol pumps. With not too many of them open in the night hours, there were scenes of scuffles among the people trying to get their bottles and cans filled before each other.

But many citizens were quick to point out that as soon as Imran Khan was elected Prime Minister a blackout was witnessed — as if it was his fault that the city was without electricity. It had not even been hours of his becoming the PM that people started blaming him for the blackout in Karachi — something that makes no sense at all.

The power breakdowns crisis is something that has outlived many a government. While the PPP government was a total failure, the previous government of the PML-N had also made tall claims of eliminating the evil of loadshedding before the end of its tenure, however it was not to be.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has five years to deliver and holding him accountable for the problems caused by other parties already only goes on to show one’s ignorance and foolishness. People should let him at least complete his first 100 days and come up to the promises he has made for those days before ruthlessly scrutinising him at every step.
