Ghotki needs universities

Letter August 14, 2018
There are no medical and engineering universities in Ghotki and students are facing many problems

GHOTKI: Ghotki is the second highest tax-paying district in Sindh. It has mineral resources and many industries such as OGDCL and Engro Fertilisers. The population of the district is 1,646,318, according to the Census 2017. But in spite of it being so resourceful and a large district of the province, the problems of Ghotki are too many. Among them are education, health, drainage, electricity, gas, water and roads. These areas haven’t been paid much attention for decades.

However, mainly education in the district needs more attention, especially higher education. There are no medical and engineering universities in Ghotki and students are facing many problems. Most students attend private universities which often charge exorbitant fees that only the rich can afford. Unfortunately, poor students cannot afford these high fees and often have to seek admission to government universities in cities across the country, such as Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Hyderabad, which are mostly too far from their homes.

Consequently, students have to face many difficulties while relocating to these cities as with most of which they are not familiar. Most students eventually drop out when they are unable to cope with difficulties arising from stress and financial constraints. This is the sad reality for our youth in Ghotki.

We, therefore, request the government to establish viable medical and engineering universities in Ghotki.
