Pakistan and the bomb

Letter May 28, 2011
The bomb made Pakistan’s defence invincible and was vital for the balance of power in the subcontinent.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy’s article of May 28 titled “Anniversary: What if Pakistan did not have the bomb?”

As far as the argument goes for whether it was good that Pakistan did not have nuclear bomb in 1971, I think Dr Hoodbhoy is right. But putting the blame for all of the hardships faced by the people of Pakistan on the bomb, is also not fair. The bomb made Pakistan’s defence invincible and was vital for the balance of power in the subcontinent. In its absence, India would have achieved complete hegemony in the region.
