It’s not just Bollywood

The cover shoot of Shahrukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan received an unexpected response from social media

LAHORE: Recently, the cover shoot of the Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan received an unexpected response from social media users as many regarded it as a mark of nepotism and one that would promote wrong practice in the industry. Factually, many questioned what makes the star-kid eligible for the cover of a globally-known magazine.

During the past year, when one Bollywood star called out a famous Indian film director for being the flag-bearer of nepotism, the issue sparked quite a debate among the film industry members. Amidst all was the divide of the opinion between those who belong to Bollywood families and those who have treaded a path of their own.

Hence, the debate over nepotism and favouritism is not just confined to Bollywood, in fact it’s quite rampant in varying work fields. Many, despite having the required common skill set, fail at earning a name for themselves. Particularly, in the run for top government posts, nepotism is an everyday practice. This primarily has to do with how the system has been structured and the lack of checks and balances as regards the recruitment practices in public offices. With a concrete system, nepotism can be curbed.
