Research establishes the benefits of involving women in the economic sphere
LAHORE: According to a World Bank report, if Pakistan manages to close its gender gap vis-a-vis female employment, it can increase its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 30 per cent. More and more females are stepping out of their houses and getting an education. In fact, in some disciplines women vastly outnumber their male counterparts. However, such figures become redundant when despite their talent, competence and educational achievements women remain outside the net of formal labour force.
One of the reasons for such a factor is the dearth of appropriate work infrastructure. This includes proper restrooms, bathrooms and sanitary care. Research has established the benefits of involving women in the economic sphere but it will be a difficult feat to accomplish if employers refuse to get sensitised to the needs of female workers. In no way, should this be taken to mean that women should get special leverage or benefits just by virtue of them being females. Rather it means providing them with safe and hygienic resources which they need in order to function productively and without any hindrance.
