Pakistan’s surreal Urdu media

Letter May 27, 2011
The Urdu medium press represents the conservative fringe of our society.

COVENTRY, UK: This is with reference to Aakar Patel’s article in two parts published on May 25 and 26 titled “Pakistan’s surreal Urdu media”.

I would like to thank the writer for this excellent piece of work. The Urdu medium press (this should be differentiated from vernacular press for example, the Sindhi press) represents the conservative fringe of our society. I believe that there is a vast majority of readers in Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa who want to hear more saner voices and read something rational. If only people like IA Rehman, Najam Sethi, Khaled Ahmed, Kamran Shafi, Pervez Hoodbhoy, Nadeem F Paracha and Raza Rumi could write in the Urdu press. Will anyone be willing to publish them though?
