Holy cow

Letter May 27, 2011
Despite a large chunk of the budget being allocated to the military, its performance lately has left many wondering.

TORONTO: Ejaz Haider’s article of May 25 titled “Hopes dancing on bald men’s hair” was excellent and daring in that he managed to criticise one of Pakistan’s remaining holy cows. A large chunk of the budget is allocated to our armed forces and it seems that despite this, its performance of late, especially as a result of the Abbottabad raid and the attack on the PNS Mehran base has left many wondering as to how well, or not, the massive funds set aside for it are being used. And to think that our defence expenditure comes at the expense of allocations that could be used for social sector and infrastructural development.
