Curbing prejudice

Letter July 20, 2018
The world has come to realise that prejudice is a historical phenomenon

ISLAMABAD: Racism and arrogant behaviour at the hands of white people is not the only type of discrimination Pakistanis have sometimes to face. Within Pakistan and among the Pakistanis themselves,  prejudice against one another on the basis of sects and classes exists. The world has come to realise that prejudice is a historical phenomenon. No state or society is free from it. Although constitutions of countries discourage discrimination and prejudice and rather seek equality among all, many lack codified laws covering varying forms of discrimination. We have to choose between continuing to live in a society divided on the basis of caste, colour, ethnicity and language, or make efforts to ensure equality, justice and accountability. The latter choice can result in the rule of law, better governance, and economic and political stability. The choice rests with us.
