One is hearing much about the need for water conservation policies and plans
ISLAMABAD: Lately, one is hearing much about the need for water conservation policies and plans. Experts and laymen all are emphasising the need for drawing up plans to prevent a water scarcity situation developing in Pakistan like the one in neighbouring India. That country’s major cities are experiencing water famine despite blocking the flow of water into Pakistan’s rivers.
In Pakistan, the concerns shown by experts have so far fallen on deaf ears. Successive governments have failed to do what is needed, that is, to build dams to store water, as every year most of the rainwater flows into the sea and thus goes to waste.
It still is not too late for the leadership to draw up practicable plans for water conservation and to work towards the building of the necessary number of dams.
All those in authority should realise that water is an essential commodity without which living beings cannot survive. Now is the time to wake up and act accordingly without any further loss of time. The authorities concerned should realise that any further procrastination and neglect would have grave consequences for the people of Pakistan.
