Rule of law

Letter June 27, 2018
The campaigning parties are expected to follow the ECP’s code of conduct, yet almost none are seen doing so

KARACHI: Governments are expected to uphold and abide by their adherence to the law. In Pakistan, one can expect the least from the political parties which blatantly remain engaged in violating the rule of law. Case in point is the upcoming general elections, for which the campaigning parties are expected to follow the ECP’s code of conduct, yet almost none are seen doing so.

With major political parties having nothing in the name of manifestoes it is an open violation of the rules. What the contesting parties are failing to realise is that the voters are pretty much aware of who’s who and who has done what, when given a chance. Hence, abiding by the regulations will actually strengthen the parties’ electoral prospects.
