Education expos and fairs are a trend for potential college applicants to become aware of their options
KARACHI: Education expos and fairs are a trend that started quite recently with the aim of making potential college applicants aware of the range of quality options available to them. Such fairs have been more useful as one can find almost all the renowned educational institutions of a city in one place with all the degree programmes being offered.
Where the practice is good on one side, on the other, it does seem to promote a sense of competition among educational institutions, competition not over the quality of education but to secure the highest number of admissions possible. There is no doubt that with the rising cost of the higher education institutions in cities, quality of education is often evaluated through what is being charged, yet this is an entirely false criterion.
The Higher Education Commission should devise a mechanism to ensure that the competition to improve quality should remain the prime motive of these institutions whereas at the same time they are barred from charging hefty amount from the students as tuition fee.
