Winning shouldn’t be the sole criterion

Letter June 25, 2018
For Imran, winning probability of candidate is primary criterion for distributing tickets

LAHORE: Putting an end to the weeks’ long protest of his party workers at Banigala, PTI Chairman Imran Khan has given his explanation over the distribution of party tickets. Apparently, to the party head, winning probability of a candidate is the primary criterion for distributing tickets, something of which old party members and workers have repeatedly complained of, for not receiving what they deserved.

Although in Pakistan, the political foothold of a contestant is a bigger factor for a decisive victory in polls than their past record of performance and the capability to deliver, the strategy Imran has employed might only win him elections but not the deliverance and the public opinion approving of his leadership.

As the PTI has also received criticism over welcoming defectors from other parties, it is important that a little consideration and regard is given to the ability and performance record of candidates before awarding them a ticket, that in the long run might cost the party its loyal workers and a divide among his party’s leadership.
