The unbiased investigation and consequential action depends on the non-partisanship of UN members
KARACHI: Many have hailed the UN report on Kashmir, cataloguing India’s brutal and unjustified use of force in the disputed region. Following that the formation of a Commission of Inquiry is also being called for. However, the report and the efforts to curb India’s atrocities in the occupied territory will go in vain if the UN action remains biased. The unbiased investigation and consequential action depends on the non-partisanship of UN members. As previously, in similar cases UN Security Council members have through their support and the right to veto have failed the Palestinian cause and the Myanmar issue when Russia and China opposed a resolution on Rohingya Muslims.
This lately has continued to be one of the issues that have undermined the UN’s credibility as a neutral mediator and arbitrator. Simultaneously it has also resulted in escalation and delayed resolution of the many of the conflicts around the world.
