Reducing tax rates

Letter June 19, 2018
It would be fair that if not entirely, taxes are reduced down to the half of the current percentage

KARACHI: For the first time in Pakistan’s history an imposed tax has been reversed entirely. During the past decade, the amount charged as taxes by the cellular companies has increased manifold. From charging Rs25 as sales tax charge, withholding tax and numerous service charges, the cost of utilising the cellphone service has become far more expensive than the once commonly used PTCL landline service. Although partially due to the convenience that the mobile phone service is, charges for the service are a complete rip-off for consumers.

The decision suspending imposition of taxes by the Supreme Court is yet to be reviewed in the light of FBR’s report on money received in taxes however it would be fair that if not entirely, taxes are reduced down to the half of the current percentage. And consumers are not charged unfairly for the services.
