Illegal housing schemes

Letter June 05, 2018
Often residents are seen getting basic utility supply connections through illegal means

KARACHI: A recent news report in a daily, states of the absence of a concrete check and balance mechanism for housing developers in Rawalpindi. The report mentions that the absence of a master plan for housing societies and the Rawalpindi Development Authority not keeping a check on the development of new housing societies have rather led to the ‘mushroom’ growth of housing projects in the city.

However, this is not the case with Rawalpindi alone. In numerous other cities, particularly big cities like Karachi, the past few years have witnessed uncountable housing projects springing up in almost every area of the cities. These projects, although they cater to the housing needs of various social classes, the accommodation provided lacks many basic facilities, such as gas supply. Often residents are seen getting basic utility supply connections through illegal means. Further, many such societies are illegally developed on plots reserved and allotted for parks, schools, mosques and recreational purposes.
