Too little, too late

Policy announcements at the end of the government’s tenure are equivalent to neglect

LAHORE: Almost a day before its dissolution, the provincial cabinet of Balochistan has approved the first-ever health policy for the province. In a similar fashion, the K-P Assembly a few days ago before its dissolution launched the human-rights policy. The above two are important policy subjects for any government, yet policy announcements at the end of the government’s tenure are equivalent to neglect.

What took five years for these governments not to focus and develop policies on human rights and health despite the fact that the situation in both health and human rights sectors in the respective provinces has been very bad? Further, after the caretaker set-up and formation of the new provincial governments after the general elections, the provinces will most likely be run in the absence of these policies, especially if the new provincial governments choose to devise policies of their own.
