Interim PM candidates

Letter May 27, 2018
Decision of caretaker setup left till the nth moment, only to add to the anxieties of stakeholders and masses

LAHORE: The final choice of interim prime minister or head of the caretaker set-up is still undecided with less than three days left for the current government. As a result, many skeptics believe that the opposition and the government purposely delayed electing an interim PM so that the decision can then be passed to a parliamentary committee and if the committee too fails to decide on a name the decision shall then be made by the Election Commission of Pakistan. This they believe would free the incumbent government members from the responsibility of justifying their chosen candidate.

Considering that now that the Leader of the Opposition, Khursheed Shah, has declared in categorical terms that no more talks will be held with the current PM to make the decision, the skeptics have indeed been proven right. Perhaps, once again just like many other important decisions such as the Fata-K-P merger bill, the decision of the caretaker setup has been left till the nth moment, only to add to the anxieties of the stakeholders and the masses.
