The fact of the matter is that even the best engineer is of no use if his skills are not exploited by our industries.
LAHORE: This is with reference to Dr Attaur Rahman’s article of May 19-20 titled “Advances in engineering education in Pakistan”.
The fact of the matter is that even the best engineer is of no use if his skills are not exploited by our industries. So creating thousands of jobless engineers is no good for anyone, least of all for the graduates. I am myself a victim of the HEC’s policy of producing engineers without creating opportunities for them to gain a job. I am an agricultural engineer from the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad and, like my other colleagues, I have yet to find a job. What should unemployed engineers do? Chant slogans in favour of the HEC?
Another tradition created by the HEC is creating a veritable race to publish research papers. Having studied at a public sector university myself, I know that most teachers have no interest in classes and use the pretext of publishing their ‘research paper’ to avoid taking classes. This should give us an indication of the quality, or lack thereof, of such papers.
