Government needs to focus on issues collectively to improve education standards in the country
MULTAN: According to the UNDP’s National Human Development report, Pakistan’s targeted rate of school enrollment rate is unachievable by the end of the next decade. Among many, one important reason cited for this is the disparity within ‘access to’ and ‘access in’ in the education sector.
Factually, in Pakistani formal education sector ‘access to’ education has improved, as not only the provincial governments have initiated numerous schools but also many social sector organisations and initiatives are also running primary schools. This way it can be stated that schools are being developed in Pakistan to cater to the younger generation.
However, the situation is bleak for ‘access in’ education, with teacher absenteeism, appointment of under qualified teachers and outdated curriculum, along with the overall poor quality of education in government-run schools. Until the government focuses on these factors collectively, the targeted enrollment rate will only remain a target.
