Deferring FATA’s merger with K-P

Letter May 18, 2018
Parties in KP's coalition government have obstructed the FATA reforms

LAHORE: Certainly a lot has been left for the next government to deal with, part of which is not just hard to tackle but could be just an area of failure for the upcoming government much like it has been for the current one. With the exception of the power and water shortages that have failed the successive governments, the issue of Fata’s merger with the K-P province has given the incumbent government a tough time. And now as expected, after repeated changes to deadlines for the merger the matter has been left for the party which is going to form  the government after the general election.

An important reason for failing to implement the merger and reforms has been the disagreement between different political parties that are part of the K-P’s coalition  government. Since same parties are likely to set the arrangement for the next government’s setup, who can guarantee that the hurdles will be overcome by then? Old interests and stakes won’t change with the change of equation albeit between the same players.
