Women have de-merited themselves by not being very critical of the process that led to their emancipation and equality
KARACHI: This is with reference to Aine Moorad’s article on May 17, for Speaker’s Corner titled “The weaker sex”.
I appreciate the fact that the writer is asking educated and independent urban women to consider all the facts before blindly following the western model, where equal treatment is demanded for women. I don’t want to dwell on incidents which reflect the ways in which women in advanced societies have de-merited themselves by not being very critical of the process that led to their emancipation and equality.
Most of us ‘women’ have experienced that while travelling or shopping alone, there will always be someone to help us with our load. And if while driving, then rest assured, if our vehicle gets a flat tyre, rest assured there will usually be someone to lend a hand. During my classes, I have often put this question to my female students, that, in pursuit of equal treatment, are they ready to let go of these privileges?
