What kind of nation do we want to be?

Letter May 18, 2011
The situation demands that the political leadership should exert itself and set its own house in order.

LAHORE: This is with reference to your report of May 18 titled “Nato choppers’ intrusions marks fresh row”.

During his visit, US Senator John Kerry said that Pakistan must decide for itself what kind of nation it wanted to become, in particular whether it wanted to become the democratic welfare state that the Quaid had envisioned.

This can only happen if this country has zero tolerance for corruption and its political leadership has the moral high ground to exert civilian supremacy over all institutions, including the armed forces. The situation demands that the political leadership should exert itself and set its own house in order. Once it does that, it will be able to bring order to all other institutions as well.

There have been too many mistakes committed in our past, where a handful of men in uniform have played with the destiny of this nation. This cannot be allowed to happen again if we want to exist as a sovereign state.
