Case for advancing summer vacation

Letter May 06, 2018
Schools should be restricted from holding classes and exams if temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius

KARACHI: The scorching temperatures in summer are hardly a new occurrence in Karachi. But with the summer coming early and heatwaves being experienced at the start of May, a lot of students, especially those going to public institutions and less pricey private ones are suffering the most.

Students have to sit and learn in classrooms that more often than not lack proper facilities. For example, many only have a single fan for a big room, and many a time either that single one too isn’t functional or switches off owing to the frequent load-shedding. On top of that, many students are currently taking their annual exams in this hot weather.

In the wake of the soaring temperatures, educational institutions, along with the provincial government, should devise a plan that restricts schools from conducting classes or exams if the temperatures go above 40oC. In fact, considering that Karachi has been experiencing rising temperatures for the past few years, summer vacations should be announced early and the examinations too should be held before the hot season begins.
