India is not the enemy

Letter May 15, 2011
The military should weed out any of its members who are sympathetic to the cause of al Qaeda

LAHORE: The briefing by the head of the ISI to parliament is probably the first of its kind and its is a rare milestone in our history in that the country’s powerful military has offered itself for accountability

That said, in all truly democratic countries the intelligences agencies work under a civilian elected government. I think by admitting to failure the head of the ISI should resign instead of saying that he will do so if asked by parliament.

Also, the military should weed out any of its members who are sympathetic to the cause of al Qaeda. This will help defuse some of the criticism that is coming from all over the world which says that the Pakistan military runs with the hares and also hunts with the hounds. Also, we should stop making distinctions between good and bad Taliban.

For a long time, the establishment has considered India as its eternal enemy. However, the events of recent days quite clearly suggest that the threat lies within.
