Lessening the burden

Letter April 15, 2018
They should not be carrying more than 10 per cent of their body weight

KARACHI: In this day and age, I fail to understand why schools force pupils to carry heavy satchels and bags that sometimes are more than their own weight. Think of the consequences this has on their poor, overloaded backs.

The findings of a recent study have shown that schoolchildren these days are at greater risk of contracting lumbago. For one they should not be carrying more than 10 per cent of their body weight.

I request to health department of Sindh to take all possible measures to lessen the burden of children and make them carry only those books that are needed as per daily timetable. The rest ought to be kept in school lockers.
