The authorities should conduct a probe into the affairs of the institution
KARACHI: Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. But when this power goes into hands of a mad elephant it tramples everything that comes in its way. Identical situation is associated with one of the oldest institutions of South Asia, Sindh Madresstul Islam (SMI) that was established with the sole purpose to give quality education to the needy and poor students of Sindh.
Unfortunately, the historic institution has fallen prey to unethical practices. Every now and then politicians, bureaucrats and judges are invited to inaugurate the same ‘project’ with a different name installed on the plaque.
If somehow guests excuse themselves, the authorities manage to reach them with all their troupes and sycophants in the name of a ‘leadership programme’. Under the programme millions are spent on national and international excursions at the cost of public money. The amount could have better been utilised to install research centre, incubation centre, hostel or transport facility for poor students, faculties and employees instead.
Moreover, many students have been expelled or semesters dropped on account of not paying fees. For such a varsity, excursion and trips are ill suited. The university is deviating from its very mission. The authorities should conduct a probe into the affairs of the institution.
